William Joseph Schmitt is the oldest child of William Francis Schmitt and Nancy Jean Pranulis.

He graduated from Middle School with High Honors, where he was a class officer, member of the school bands, and active in the drama club. He attends a private High School in Connecticut where he is enrolled in honors and advanced courses. He plays first trumpet for the various school bands (Marching, Concert, and Jazz), and is also a member of the school Brass Ensemble and active in the school drama club.

He has been active in the Boy Scouts since joining the Cub Scouts, and currently holds Life Rank. He has held a number of leadership positions in the troop, including Troop Bugler, Quartermaster, and Patrol Leader, and is currently Senior Patrol Leader, leading all troop meetings. He is a Brotherhood member and local lodge officer of the Order of the Arrow (the National Honor Society for the Boy Scouts), a member of two Venture patrols, and a Camp Counselor at the Summer Camp. He is also the Den Chief for his brother Harry's Cub Scout Den and was recently recognized by the Scouts for his contributions over and above expectations. He is currently working on his Eagle Scout project. He attended the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia in 2005.

William is an avid skier, and was on the Otis Ridge racing team (Slalom) for a number of years. He has been a Counselor at the Otis Ridge Ski Camp, and recently started as a Ski Instructor.

His current plans for the future are leaning towards law and politics.
