John Winn

The earliest known member of the Winn family is Owen Winn who was born in Wales. It is not clear whether Owen was the first to emigrate to the colonies or his son John was.

The Winn family was located primarily in Virginia, and is mentioned in a number of pages found on the internet related to the American Revolution. Considering their involvement and location it is possible that they were acquainted with either James Madison or Thomas Jefferson, though this is only conjecture.
