Edward C Ancell was the oldest known child of Edward Ancell and Sarah Catterton, and the first known member of the family to be born in the Americas. He was born on Christmas Day in 1771 in Orange, Virginia.

He married Ann Winn in Fluvanna, Virginia on August 30, 1813, and they had 7 known children, (b April 24, 1815, d March 30, 1885), Lucetta Todd (b May 17, 1817, d February 27, 1884), Edward James (b. October 16, 1818, d 1852), William Henry (b. November 12, 1822), Elizabeth Ann (b. August 3, 1825), Benjamin Franklin (b. June 16, 1828, d. May 30, 1864), and John Jay (b. September 21, 1831, d. March 31, 1894).

Both the 1850 and 1860 Census forms list his profession as "Farmer" and in the 1850 Slave Census, he owns 6 slaves.

He appears to have lived his entire life in Orange, Virginia, and died there on August 12, 1866.
